In honor of Spore’s creature creator coming out, I thought I would post Robin William’s infamous demonstration of it from youtube. Enjoy!

Too Many Gizmos

God forbid I leave the house without my cell phone. And, of course, I need my mp3 player for distraction from annoying conversations, my portable video game just in case the music isn't distracting enough, my voice note recorder in case I come up with a better idea for a blog than this one, and so forth.

If I try and stuff all this mini tech in my pants pockets I end up looking like I have hip tumors, plus after a brisk walk I wind up with my phone on silent, my camera out of power, and a long audio recording of the inside of my pocket. There has to be a better solution. Women already have purses. Men need something similar that they can use while preserving the arbitrary, restrictive gender roles that make this country great. Here's a look at the options:

Backpack

Backpacks work fine for situations where you're going from class to class or home to office, but for on-the-go geeking, they're too klugey. If you strap it to your back you can't reach anything in it, and if you just hang it over one shoulder it's uncomfortable and contributes to the repetitive stress injuries you've acquired from using the electronic devices you store in it.

Worst part: The little pouch in the very back always unzips and your favorite 20-sided die falls out.

Satchel

There are some really slick satchels out there, including some from the Swiss Army people. Hey, it has "army" in it! Death, killing, very masculine. Ignore the Swiss part. I spent a lot of time observing masculine people in their native environments, and I concluded that there are two major requirements for a manly satchel. First off, the strap must attach to the main body with a huge metal latch that looks like it could attach the cab of a semi to the trailer. Secondly, it needs to have a handle, so you can convey the impression that it's really a briefcase, and you only have it over one shoulder because you're late for a tractor pull.

Worst part: It could be made out of titanium steel with a pinup girl airbrushed onto the side and people would still call it a "purse."

Fanny pack

This is great if you're trying to create a singularity of pure geekness that will open up a portal to an alternate universe where they're still making episodes of Reboot. But if there are even two working neurons in the style portion of your brain, the same neurons that explained that Mr. T's haircut won't look as good on you, then you're going to want to pass on this one. On the other hand, if you've burned those neurons out through years of cosplay, more power to you. Just don't stand near me.

Worst part: Do you really want to appear to have two rear ends?

Belt clips

I have fashioned a functional and fashionable chinchilla pen out of the belt clips that have come with my cell phones and pagers over the years. The problem is that if you strap all of your devices to your belt you don't look a damned thing like Batman. You just look like yourself, only with lumps of plastic holding up your belly like little flying buttresses.

Worst part: Damn things pinch.

Bandoliers

OK, this is my contribution, but it's a good one. Bandoliers are comfortable, have very masculine overtones, and Chewbacca wore one. I could totally see dropping my miniature bleeping possessions into the pouches of a bandolier, cheerfully strapping it on, heading out into the world, and getting shot down by a paranoid security guard. That's why it can't be just me by myself; this needs to be a culturewide fashion move. So for now, and this is vital, geeks can't use them. It pains me to say this, but we are not fashion trend-setters, my brethren. We need to get Jude Law or Will Smith into one of these pups, let them throw old-media fans into an imitative tizzy, then we can start wearing them. Trust me, it'll be worth it.

Worst part: Now some geek's going to wear one to Comicon and ruin everything.

Another Scary Cult Video

I can’t resist. I need to do one more post on the cult of Scientology. I was sent this great you-tube video on how manipulative and scary the cult is.

John Sweeny, a well regarded journalist for the BBC, tries his best to work rationally to expose the cult of scientology. In the end, he cracks a bit, to be honest, I would have to.

A Valentine’s Day so cute it will make you sick.

The last thing I would want to do is make my readers sick with a mushy post about something cute, but today, being Valentine’s Day, somebody I have recently met went out of their way to do something very endearing.

I went down into the lobby area to see all these women hovering over this little delivery man overwhelmed with a huge bouquet of flowers. It turns out, they were sent to me. They seemed shocked that the flowers were sent to a guy and not one of them, which made the experience even more fun.

Josh, you’re as cute as a teddy bear, you have a huge heart, Happy Valentine’s Day.

The Frawd That Is Scientology

I will say, without shame, I do believe scientology is a dangerous cult that has done more harm than good. I think it preys on the desperate and trusting and I’m glad to see that there are people, in this world, that are willing to stand up to it. It is what many call a “bait and switch religion”. It keeps a reasonable front, surrounding an irrational and militaristic core built on the concept of division and slavery. It is my belief, as well as many others, that it has facilitated fraud and even murder. Proof can be found with the starvation and suicide of many of its members.

Normally I would avoid such a negative subjects in my blog, but I think it’s important that everybody does their part in regard to this issue at hand. Even my home city of Vancouver has a scientology recruitment center in its core, something I think need to be exposed.

On a side note, I have found it fascinating how the internet has given birth to the organized protests of this cult. How people all over the world gather in front of the recruitment centers and show their support to expose it for what it really is.

Below I have gathered a number of videos in regard.
