In the past, I spent some time living in the United States, and though I’m not sure its sensationalist methods have made it a better process, it has certainly made it a more interesting one.

I will say I’m gunning for Obama over McCain. I have a strong belief that the Democratic Party has done a better job handling the country from financials to human rights. And here is my opinion why.

Financials

A friend of mine down in Florida, a staunch republican supporter, has always argued that the democrats are “spend happy”. This year, I don’t think any republican could argue that the current president has made any attempts to balance the budget, something I always felt Clinton was aiming for, and might have done had he not left office. So what about the past? I think this graph sums it up. I don’t think it’s that the Democratic Party spends more; I think it’s that they realize you can’t run a country without its debt eventually causing major issues. If the United States had to meet the same guide lines that it expects its corporations to reach, it would be a third world country by now. With how the economy is going, they’re looking a lot more like Mexico these days.

Human Rights

I think one of the best quotes that sums up what I stand for comes from a movie called “the American president”.

“America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say you want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest.”

Traditionally (with exception) republicans have been too trigger happy to support taking away the rights and freedoms of others. They don’t recognize the difference between ethics and laws. Though it might not be respectful to burn the symbol of a country, it should not be illegal if you're going to call yourself “the land of the free”.

Sarah Palin has already been caught pushing the idea that certain books should not be found in libraries because they do not uphold Christian ethics. And nobody has ever made a rational augment for book banning.

McCain has stated he wants to overturn Roe vs. Wade, and though I can respect the argument against abortion, I don’t think it’s right for people to tell others what they can and cannot do with their body during the first few months of conception. The deceptive idea that anybody is pro abortion is absurd; nobody WANTS to see abortion, but most I believe, if fully educated on the matter, want to see that choice made by the individual.

Environment

This one is an easy argument. We need clean air, clean water and we don’t want future generation to only know what our wild life looks like from pictures in text books. Nothing bugs me more than a party which stands by the notion that 6 to 7 billion life form are not in any way effecting global warming, and I’m glad to see that the party has been put in its place with raw data proving that how we have been treating this planet will ultimately effect the health of our future generation. I stand by a system that punishes people through higher costs for driving Hummers and massive SUV s. I don’t think this should be added on to general taxes, but rather all the cars should be rated on their environmental value, the top half should be paying a substantial portion of the lower half’s insurance costs.

Religion

This is a touchy subject for many, so I shall be delicate. I’m all for religious freedom, but I believe the Republican Party has too often tried to make it very hard for people to live in the United States who are not Christian. I don’t believe that a single penny of tax money should go toward any religious groups. Churches have, in many cases, used religious doctrine (which could argue any point) to control free speech and human rights such as gay marriage. This is the only subject I’m disappointed with Obama on. He has said in the past that he only believes in civil unions for gay people. Is he saying this to avoid the subject and perhaps uphold human rights once in office? Maybe, but then you could argue that he is trying to play both sides of the fence.

Health Care

Simply put. I believe in universal health care that is equal for all and the only systems I have ever seen work like that are those under a nations in which health care is provided for by the government. Nobody deserves to live a shorter life or suffer more because they don’t have enough money. I count myself lucky to live in a country where people can afford good health, but I envy nations such as the UK which the system is made far simpler. McCain seemed to avoid the subject and stall on the idea, and Obama believes in the notion of government paid health care. The big question is, will he be allowed to work in a system which might be open to the idea. Nobody has a problem with a government run fire departments, and I consider human health just as important as saving people from a burning building.

Education

I'll make this one short. Look at all the states with republican senators, and compare it to all the states with democratic senators. You will find a pattern.

What else?

The reality is I think John McCain is more a puppet for his party, rather than a leader. His choice of what seems like a female “Bush” verified my views on it. And his attempts to seem like a “Maverick” or rebel in his own party to separate himself from the Bush administrative comes accross as fake and deceptive. His own party members have advised him lately to avoid the heavy issues if he wants to win the election, something that seems ridiculous. People have forgotten the fraud and corruption that brought him before the courts 20 years ago. I’m not saying Obama is perfect, but I think he is far more open minded and willing to surround himself with people who might challenge his own ideas and fill in his weaknesses.

With all that said, I encourage people to study up. Don't just rely on bloggers such as myself or party members. Bad politicians thrive and feed on lazy minded people unwilling to research.

I encourage people to comment on this entry, with repect.

Confessions of a Super Hero

I just finished watching one of the best documentaries I have ever seen called “Confessions of a Super Hero”. The game has a system in play that only lets you install the game 3 times before you must phone them up, and get the license reset. Is this to curb pirating; because it seems to have had the opposite effect? For every one person I know who has bought the game, I know at least 3 who have pirated it due to it DRM restrictions.
To make things worse, they only allow a person to make one user account per license. This means families who buy the game, will not be able to have separate user accounts for each family member.

All of this, for a game, that has not turned out nearly as good as the hype made it out to be. After only a few days, I find myself growing bored of its repetitive play. Considering how long it has taken to produce, and how they portrayed it as this giant game that would define a new genre, I felt there should be more. I’m sure on some level, they are saving some features for the expansion, so they can con people out of another 50 bucks.

I’m not saying this game is a huge bomb. But I would certainly not pay 50 bucks for it, and they need to realise the %$!# people have to wade through to have it on their computers. When I buy a game, I should be able to install that game for as long as I’m alive, as many times as I wish without having to phone their support.

Glass Tiger, Justin Bua and BorderlineDaft.com

The last Saturday of August, Orwin and myself, ended up at the PNE. I still can't, for the life of me, figure out what the PNE is trying to be. Does it want to be a "Connie island", a "Six Flags" or a "Disney-world"? Personally, I think they should take more aggressive steps to try to purchase the park land its situated on. It has the potential to become something great. Though, it was an odd surprise to see many of the new characters around the park, including , Care Bears, Bearingstein Bears, Snoopy and Babar, many brought in with a Canadian company buying Deek. The night was finished off with a "Glass Tiger Concert" (yes, they are still alive). I recorded it, but not a lot of it turned out. The microphone in my mp3 player can't handle those auditive levels.

The following weekend I ended up having a friend from Alberta in town. Hes one of those few people who can appreciate a good indie movie with. We have this tradition of watching "Lost in Translation" every time we see each-other.

Life itself, with the new job, is coming together. Things are starting to feel like a Wes Anderson Film. All I need now is Bill Murry, and considering my line of work, i suppose that's not impossible.

Unfortunately, Its kind of bad form for me to spill the beans on what films and TV shows were working on, but the second they are out in theaters, I will be the first to fess up.

This week, I'm hoping that I might get Borderline Daft up and running on some level. I'm still having issues with the template generator. I was able to set up the back end and database with a little guidance from George (my private geek, nobody touch him, hes mine!). I finally figured out the direction I'm going with it and I've started to set up the first few comics. Hopefully in time, I can get a good reader base.

On a side note, I found this kick ass Astroboy print online, but it's all the way in the UK. It's going to cost more to ship it, than to buy it. Anybody have any ideas on how to get a 4 foot wide mounted poster across that huge body of water without the heavy cost?

On a similar subject, I went into this print gallery two days ago noticing that they are selling some of Justin Bua's work. They said his stuff is selling faster than they can get it in, especially the print i purchased earlier this year called "The Block". I think I might have figured out why; If you look around, there is very little urban style art that people would want on their wall out there. I remember when I first watched the show "Heroes", I fell in love with the comic style paintings that one the character produces. More so, because you never see anything like that large scale, at least not out in the open.

Perhaps I'll take a crack at a few large pieces, and see what I can produce.

Jeremy! Back when I use to work for Disney, I found myself having to dance around the best part of my day and it drove me nuts.

So what am I doing now? I’m working for this kick ass props and special effects firm. Not a cg factory, but one that does old school, latex monsters and such. The company is called WCT productions. They seem to get some of the biggest feature films and television shows, so they must know what they are doing. I have to assume they are one of the bigger in western Canada. The warehouse is amazing, set up to build anything.

It’s too bad I intend on going into animation, because this job could have put me into a very kick ass position. It was about 180 to 190 floats; over 2 and half hours. I was even able to spot a few friends in it. And when it was over, you could follow the parade to giant party on the beach with promotional tents everywhere. Thought the highlight of the whole event was watching Love Inc. live on stage. I miss that group. For those of you not from Vancouver, it’s like Connie Island; but instead of a fair, its filled with hippy shops and a little floating marine village. But don’t worry; they’re the trendy city hippies, not smelly country hippies. I could not help but take a liking to those floating homes. Might even consider buying something like that for myself come this fall.

One of my friends sensed my neurotic fascination with a stuffed bear I found in a toy store and ended buying him for me. I’ll admit it, I have a small collection of teddy bears, but they are all good quality ones. What can I say, i live alone and don't want a cat.

Today was spent at a country fair. A friend, Dan, wanted to see the rabbit show, and I figured it might be cool to see country folk in their natural habitat. It turns out they like 80’s music and livestock, go figure. If I could dress up like a cartoon cow, and get a piano guitar, I could really make a killing.
On a final not, I’m finally getting ready to start my web comic. I’ve started sketching a few ideas. Hopefully it will be one more step to becoming a better artist.

Do I have a girly Phone?

Yahhh!! Two weeks ago I interviewed for a position with a considerably large effects, costumes and props studio. The interview went well, and it seemed like a place I would really enjoy working while I move forward with my animation degree, but when it was all over, they told me that they can’t hire me until the screen actors guild has settled on a new contract. This position would mean I could be a very stable position allowing me to finally buy a home. All I can do is wait, and it’s driving me nuts.

One another note, last weekend I went to the grouse grind. I have to admit, it was a harder climb than it had been in previous years; I guess I’ve been getting a bit sluggish the last year. With a little help from Dan, hopefully that will change.

On a final note, we went to a kick ass props warehouse I had not been to since I left for Disney. That's right, Jeremy went to the Ballet, and I'm afraid to say, I enjoyed it. Not just because of all the attractive people in tight cloths, but also because I helped set it up and it was for a great cause. The production was through Goh Ballet, my current employer, and all the benefits went to the BC Children's Hospital. It was so exciting being able to meet all the politicians and international ambassadors. We had Rolex donate a 10,000 watch for a raffle prize, and it was great seeing all the people willing to buy tickets.

If anybody is interested in donating 20 dollars to the BC children's Hospital, you can contact me through here and I can arrange a raffle ticket for you. Or you can contact Goh Ballet at 604-872-4014. Ask for the amazing Jeremy, and if I'm not around, I'm sure somebody else can help you out.

Sunday was spent at a nude beach out by UBC. I know what you're thinking, and no; I kept my clothes on. I was too much of a chicken %$#!. The whole beach smelled of fish, tanning lotion and pot. Robert Downey JR Sir, you rock. He pulled off taking a story which could have just as easily turned out very dated, and made it into an adventure film worthy of the big screen. I could smell the sequel once the credits were rolling.

It seems that Hollywood’s 2 year funk of horrid films is finally coming to an end. I'm looking forward to a few, including the new Indian Jones, Kung Fu Panda and James Bond. It’s been a long time since I felt that.

This morning, while blogging, I'm watching "I'm not There". It made me consider something. The era of true adventures is pretty much over. People don't appreciate the amazing traits of the dirty; passionate people are passé I guess. Look at Dylan, he got from point A to B through a rough road; he became what he was because of it. He held off on what was easy and normal to be a crater on the face of this mud ball. Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning drug use, or even condemning it. But I have to give a man credit for living, for inviting trouble into his life so that he understood it and could face the problems of the world. These days, people try to fake it. They go to Emily Car and pretend their deep artists. They try to meet the stereotype, but the real artists are the ones trying to break the stereotype. They are the ones stirring the pot, and making you think.

Ollie Johnston Passed On...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px;"src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/ac/OLLIE1989.jpg/225px-OLLIE1989.jpg" border="0" alt="" />Ollie Johnston, the last of the "Nine Old Men" of classic Disney Animators, passed away on Wednesday. I've been putting off phoning the school for a while. I need to make an appointment to see what my new options are, now that my hours don’t jump around so much.

Things seem to be coming back together for me. When I arrived back here in Vancouver, I had a lot of trouble adjusting. In all honesty, I missed working for Disney. Sad to say, I was pretty content working under the iron white glove of mickey. I had a pretty cushy position that was the envy of most on board. I think it was my equivalent of running away and joining the circus. Hopefully, ill get a few more tastes of it in the next couple years. Considered returning for a summer before i complete my schooling.

Today I picked up some larger paper; I got sick of working on 8.5 x 11. Now I just need a larger scanner to match, does anybody recommend any cheap 11x17 models. I think it’s about time I start sharing my art with my blog reader.
